Nepali Congress lawmaker Nilambar Acharya has been elected chairperson of the Constitutional Committee (CC) Friday.
Acharya was elected to the post securing 29 votes, defeating Maoist candidate Narayan Kaji Shrestha. 21 CC members voted in favour of Shrestha.
50 votes were cast out of the total 63. Terai Madhesh Loktantrik Party and Rastriya Prajatantra Party Nepal boycotted the election.
Voting was conducted after the main parties failed to agree on a common candidate despite several rounds of negotiations.
The election process, which was to start at 8 am went hours behind schedule with the top leaders of the three main political parties – Unified CPN (Maoist), Nepali Congress and UML – engaging in a meeting to reach a consensus on the CC chair.
Top leaders of the main parties including Prime Minister and UML leader Madhav Kumar Nepal, Maoist chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, Nepali Congress president Girija Prasad and UML chairman Jhala Nath Khanal, also took part in the voting. These leaders also the members of the CC.
