PM to discuss key issues of army integration with parties; Maoists want HLPM to take final decision

The Special Committee on supervision, integration and rehabilitation of the Maoist combatants has entrusted Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal with the responsibility to forge understanding with the parties on the number of combatants to be integrated in security agencies.

A meeting of the Special Committee held at the Prime Minister’s Office Wednesday arrived at the conclusion to reach out to the parties for a consensus.

The decision was reached as the Maoist representatives proposed to delegate key issues of army integration including determining the number of combatants to be integrated in the security forces and devising criteria for the selection of combatants wanting to be integrated to the High Level Political Mechanism.

According to Maoist leader Janardan Sharma, a member of the Special Committee, the Prime Minister will hold talks with the leaderships of the parties on his action plan on integration and rehabilitation of Maoist army men and arrive at a decision that would be acceptable to all.

PM Nepal’s action plan presented at the Special Committee aims to complete the integration and rehabilitation works in 112 days.

In today’s meeting, Nepali Congress and CPN (UML) representatives also urged the Maoist representatives not to let the PLA members be involved in unruly activities, according to Dr Ram Sharan Mahat, representative of NC at the Special Committee.

The Maoists and the ruling parties have serious differences on the number of combatants to be integrated in the security bodies including the Nepal Army.
